Description
Hortense is a symmetrical triangular shawl that is knit from the tip upwards, widening as you go with a set of increases. Light and airy, it is knit in an alternating pattern of flower stitch and garter stitch. It is bordered by an i-cord on 2 elongated stitches and finishes with a picot edging, which gives it structure and character. Hortense is a very versatile shawl: depending on the base you choose, it will make a perfect little summer shawl or a cozy neck warmer for winter. It’s up to you!
Hortense was designed to be made with one skein of fingering weight yarn (100gr = 400m = 440 yds) but can be extended by repeating the motifs.
LEVEL Intermediate + (lace, picots)
ONE SIZE 160cm (63’’) long by 40cm (35.5’’) deep
MATERIALS
One skein* of fingering weight yarn (100gr = 400m). I used MilkyWay in the Campêche colorway from ByNightCréations (purple Hortense) and BabyLama from Accrofils (pink Hortense).
*You can plan for some leftover fingering weight yarn or a mini skein for the picot edging in a contrasting colour if you are afraid of running out of yarn.
Circular needles: 4 mm (100-120cm) or 6US (40-47’’)
Note: Needle size is a suggestion. Use the needles that allow you to obtain the same gauge as me (see below)
Notions: 2 stitch markers, 1 contrasting colour yarn of at least 2 meters, tapestry needle, scissors.
GAUGE*
Knit with 4mm needles following the chart on page 9 and measured after aggressive blocking: 19 sts x 44 rows = 10 x 10 cm = 4 x 4 inches
*For a shawl, gauge is not essential but consider:
– that I am a tight knitter , so you can go down half a needle EU size if you have a normal tension, or even a full size if your tension is very loose.
– that if your tension is looser than mine, the recommended yardage of 400m will not be enough.
